INTRODUCTION
Managing the future of your organisation is not difficult. “It's just making a list of the things you need to worry about in a 20 year time frame and then doing something about it.”
This is true no matter what kind of organisation you are managing. With just 4 steps Sustain is the simplest method we could devise to do it.
ONE SIZE FOR ALL: Horizon SW has developed this toolkit ‘by managers for managers' through two programmes with groups of organisations of every size and type. It is designed to provide a simple practical framework that can be adapted to your needs.
SECOND ISSUE: In this second issue of we have simplified and refined the toolkit in the light of our experience, and updated it as the matters of concern to sustainability develop and change.
SIMPLICITY: The pedigree of the tools and structure originate in quality management systems, and ISO14001 environmental management systems. We recognise managers' need to dovetail sustainable management with such existing systems. However we have gone for absolute simplicity. Our toolkit is designed to help you initiate practical long term change towards sustainability, rather than providing auditable systems boxes to tick. In time a sustainable management standard such as BS8900 may become popular. Implementing this toolkit will enable you to satisfy most of the demands suggested in the 2006 draft standard.
MENTOR NEEDED: It is essential to understand this is not a DIY kit. Our experience is that little happens unless an outside practitioner or mentor is there to assist. If nothing else, the mere fact he/she is booked in your diary gets things moving and keeps up momentum.
So we expect the toolkit to be adapted by a trained and experienced mentor, perhaps from one of Horizon's member organisations (see about Horizon) to meet the needs of your company. As a manager you can use it by yourself but we have not written it with that in mind, and would not recommend starting solo.
FOUR STEPS FORWARD: There are four key steps. For each of them we provide a one page Guide, plus Tools, and Examples. This PDF document has hyperlinks ‘Go to Map' from every page to the map, and from the map to every section. So the map is your key to navigating ‘Sustain – Issue 2'.
In addition there are four draft training sessions for you to adapt and use with in-company management teams. The sessions include some example outputs for illustration. There is also a brief PowerPoint presentation called ‘Resilience' showing the kind of information that is becoming available to managers to assist in planning for the future.
